Barbie celebrated her 65th birthday this year but it's not the anniversary dolls that make me interested!

Barbara Millicent Roberts celebrated her 65th birthday this year - and of course there were the corresponding collector’s anniversary dolls to mark the occasion (along with a slew of play-line releases) but it was not any of them that caught my eye. Instead, I loved a new release exclusive to Mattel Creations, available for sale on the 21st of March 2024 on their website: Barbie Styled by Design Doll 1.

What a gorgeous Barbie doll - and without the usual sweet smile that they have (65th anniversary dolls included). The sculpt is Claudette, which is usually, if not only, found on collector limited editions, and it is one of my very favourites, because of the high fashion look it has. Her face paint looks good, if you ignore the black crease line in her eyes that shows the dreaded pixels (I mean… they could have avoided that, right?). Her hairstyle is too simple for such a doll, but I am guessing it helps keep the cost down. Would have preferred her being in the pivotal body.

I love her dress and the colour combination - very French. Also notice that she has metallic jewellery and her boots are made of fabric and not plastic! All these should be self evident in collector dolls but with Mattel there is no guarantee. Too bad she is such a limited edition and will disappear in a blink of the eyes. I’d love to have her and it looks like she’s the first in a series, so I’m excited to see what comes next. She looks great in her box too.

When In Paris Poppy Parker is the 3rd W Club doll of 2023!

The 3rd W Club Exclusive doll of the 2023 membership year was revealed just before Christmas. It is a mini gift set reminiscent of early Poppy Parker dolls and there's an extra-long pre-order window to accommodate the holiday season, as Integrity Toys will be closed until after New Year’s. The Story:

Poppy Parker returns to the City of Light, but this time, it’s for the Noir Cosmetics ad campaign, to unveil a brand new companion makeup line for their iconic “When in Paris” fragrance!

Feeling light and carefree on the way to the photo shoot, Poppy grabbed her favourite dotted trench and wore it over a very chic, sleek black turtleneck and cropped trousers combo, which of course landed her on the pages of all the top French fashion magazines, making her fans scramble to copy the look!

Once she finally got to the studio, there was a lot of back and forth regarding the perfect gown she would wear in the ads, but everyone soon agreed that only Poppy’s friend Monsieur Mignon, her "go to" couturier, could pull this off! Monsieur was thrilled to recreate one of her most coveted dresses in black while adding some delicate embellishments, making the gown even more special for his favourite client! It was just what the Noir campaign needed, and the perfect look for Poppy to cast her charms on her French fans for the second time. When in Paris, indeed!

She’s a recoloured version of Friend or Foe Poppy Parker, from the gift set when Ginger made her first appearance, which was back in December 2019 - so it is another Moment for Poppy. I like the dress better in black, it makes it surely more Parisian and more sophisticated, but, as you see in the photo below and will not hear or read about it anywhere from Integrity Toys…

…the doll is a double throwback: she’s got the screening of the Audrey Hepburn Sabrina dolls, which I mostly have - and they look so much better than she does, mainly because of the hairstyle and the red lipstick. The photo above mimics an Audrey classic from Breakfast At Tiffany’s, which was remade by Steven Meisel with Christy Turlington. If I did not have any of those dolls, I’d grab this one right away. Not now though. The black beatnik outfit is a typical Audrey look from both Sabrina (IT released a version there in the Most Sophisticated gift set) and Funny Face (which looks more like this one). The make up and perfume accessories have been seen before many times.

Adornements is the new East 59th collection by Chris Stoeckel for Integrity Toys!

A new East 59th Collection was presented to W Club members, created of course by Integrity Toys' designer Chris Stoeckel. It is the Adornments Collection and the story-line says that Laird Drake's agency just signed a very lucrative deal with Adorn, one of New York City's most prestigious luxury jewellers, to launch a smashing ad campaign promoting some of their most elaborate jewellery. So you can expect lots of gems and glamour in the designs. Here is Chris talking about the collection:

What a lovely lady! Aurelia looks amazing and the whole set exudes luxury and glam in the proper style of the era the story unfolds. It is great to see different colouring on the make up of these dolls - the purple tones compliment the outfit and the amethyst jewellery perfectly. I would have preferred a fabric stole instead of the fur bolero, bringing the whole set more towards an evening ensemble. Chris said she also references Purple Factor Adèle Makeda from 2003.

The problem with most Victoire dolls is that they are gorgeous yet usually look alike so much that I do not get them, missing out on gorgeous outfits like this. The pattern looks more like gingham than houndstooth (as the description says). Love the headband. The bag looks like a Birkin (which was introduced in 1984), which is quite the anachronism, as a Kelly would be much more suitable and era appropriate. Guess Hermès stole the design from someone, right?

Coralynn looks gorgeous again in this lovely outfit, which would have looked even better if it had a hostess skirt over it, much like the first Constance had. Love the bejewelled cigarette holder. I ordered this one immediately.

The Story:

When he signed the deal with Adorn, Laird Drake did not hesitate to immediately reserve a spot on the cover of his favourite gentlemen's magazine for him to appear on in person, because, after all, save for maybe his beau, he knew that he was the only man in New York who could correctly model Adorn's line of ultra-masculine high-end timepieces! The company's lead designers did not even try to argue; there was no point fighting it, Laird Drake was just the most elegant man in the City!

Laird looks like Leonardo di Caprio a lot in this new incarnation. Both hairstyle and face-paint are so much different than the first Laird released. He looks very glamorous in his white tie ensemble. The white socks are jarring on this - they are NEVER worn with anything for evening dress, much less a white tie suit. Chris said he wanted to have a break from the pants to the shows, to make the latter pop more but… He added that it is also a nod to Audrey wearing white socks with black loafers in Funny Face, which is something totally different of course. Also cummerbunds are usually left to black-tie dressing or musicians in swing bands when it comes to white tie, a waistcoat is the proper item. At least the pants look like they have two galon as is proper. When are we going to see a proper jacket with tails in these retro era gents? If he had one I would have snatched him in a second. His forehead is low for my taste. EDIT: the production dolls look like they have a much higher hairline than the prototype.

With this in mind, Laird Drake had the genius to cast Constance Madssen as his leading cover girl. With the only diva in town who could rival in beauty with the vibrant blue of the most luxurious topaz ever set in gold at the helm, the East 59th Agency set the tone on how precious jewels should be advertised forever!

Easily the best doll of the collection, Constance looks amazing here, reminding me a lot of Maria Callas. Appropriately enough, this year is the 100th anniversary from her birth. She also reminds me of a Latina superstar, María Félix, which just had a doll released by Mattel. The gown is spectacular and I love the vinyl gloves, even though the material should have been different to match the era. She has the best jewellery of all the dolls and I think a small, crown-like hair ornament would have completed the ensemble. Even her shoes are bejewelled. Happy to say I won her at the lottery!

Curated: the first in-person event from Integrity toys since 2019!

"Curated" is the first exclusive in-person unveiling event hosted by Integrity Toys since the pandemic begun (and the last in person convention in 2019). It was held on the 14th of July in Washington DC. Attendees got to view the event collection displayed in a gallery setting, each doll in her own cabinet like an exhibit. Then, after the gallery viewing, at a nearby second location, the attendees got to shop, grab a bite and drink, and mingle together. There is no information regarding whether or not any of these items will be available for W Club members at this time, or for anyone else. There was mention of a colour variant for club members, way back when this was first announced but no mention yet even of this.

Fashion Royalty had two dolls - and Isha makes a welcome return. She is wearing a gorgeous white dress with gold embellished denim inserts at the front and faux buttonholes. Looks inspired by this Spring 2022 RTW Schiaparelli jacket and this dress from the Spring 2022 Couture collection. She is sporting a head band with bunny ears (very 40s style and also reminds me of Josephine Baker - it is from Schiaparelli Fall 2021 Couture collection). Her other accessories are golden gloves, a white bag with golden embroidered decorations matching the dress, lovely white shoes with gold straps, and golden jewellery - love the eye bracelet, very Schiaparelli and also very Greek. She also wears fishnet stockings, in keeping with the retro 40s overall vibe. She is the souvenir doll of the event, given to all attendees as part of their ticket admission price.

Second appearance for Tiago - and a boy for NU Face instead of a lady - but don’t forget we had a small NU Face Moments unveiling very recently, so it figures. I think Jessy totally need to wear this outfit in real life. The rose covered coat has been done before by IT, but this one is transparent and in a light colour. The shirt looks like it is trying to be Jacquemus but looks too stiff. I never liked the underwear band showing over the pants and this one is no exception, whether it is real or faux. Love the colouring, the rest not that much. And the bag looks cheap compared to the rest of the outfit, Coperni miniature or not.

Not crazy about the hairstyle (I always find these thick braids a bit lazy) but the rest of her rocks - doll and outfit, Love that she has lots of options to style and dress, from her mini outfit to the big ball gown. The pattern is very 80s and it would have looked even better had the scale been a little larger. Just like Steven Sprouse did it. Love her.

For me this is the star of the collection/event. Finally the Ayumi 2.0 sculpt makes a comeback and she is gorgeous. Perfect hairstyle and make up complement the beautiful face - which here looks quite like her current incarnation. The gown is Schaparelli inspired, mainly from this Spring 2022 RTW gown, with the colouring picked off this Fall 2021 Couture gown. Breathtaking. Look at the accessories - those gold band bracelets are everything. And the gold dipped fingers and silver nails is so Schiaparelli too. Want her - I hope we get this one as a colour variation in the W Club, the original gown is pink and black, so one can hope.

Jason Wu Poppy Parker Spring 2021 pair of dolls

Last time we saw a pair of Jason Wu designed Poppy Parker dolls was back in 2020 with the 20th Anniversary collection. Now we get two new ones, available only through lottery to W Club members. Both are wearing Spring 2021 Jason Wu outfits in miniature and have one more thing in common: freckles. I am not crazy about freckles in dolls, as they always look out of scale and cartoony to me. But that is just a matter of taste. As for the styling and fashions…

I would have loved this face without the freckles - even though her eyeshadow looks like she has stye. Pinks and reds are always risky as eyeshadows. The outfit is not what I would have associated with Jason Wu, if I saw it on a photo without a caption. Sporty and relaxed, it is not what I usually look for in dolls, especially expensive Jason Wu designed ones. And while the miniature sandals look very realistic, they give off cheap tourist vibes. Poppy Parker models a beautiful, romantic look from Jason Wu's Spring 2021 collection! Looking fresh and youthful with her adorable freckles and long slightly curled bright red hair, this girl is just full of love and can't wait to come home to you!

Keeping up with the sorbet colours, this one is in deep pink, still with the dreaded freckles and still sporting an outfit that is great on a human visiting the Acropolis in the summer but I do not want it anywhere near my dolls, especially the sandals. Surprisingly, this one looks better on the doll than on the model. Speaking of which, why not this one being AA like the model too? Would have been so much more interesting. This one might look better worn open at the front, over slack striped pants and a cropped top, paired of course with different style sandals. I think it is time that if Jason designs another Poppy, we should get something with the caliber of Bergdorf Goodman Poppy. The “rich lady on a trip to Hydra island” style is tired. Look how Jacquemus does summer.
